Transit Gallery

Matthew Varey was born in Hamilton in 1968. Fiercely prolific, he has employed his passion for materials and colour since the beginning of his career in 1986. Figurative elements and physical surfaces were featured in large works until 1998. Varey’s interest shifted from overt social narratives and textured surfaces to a refined celebration of the elemental beauty within naturally occurring systems. Varey amalgamated aspects of his work in colour photography and abstract painting to create his unique series, Blueprints of the Universe. Since Varey’s first international solo exhibition in Europe in 1995, he has been featured in a three person exhibition at the Fondazione Bevelacqua la Massa in Venice, and at art fairs in Berlin, Toronto, Cologne and Miami. Recent acquisitions have gone to the Vancouver Stock Exchange and to private collections in the United States, Korea, England, Spain, Greece, Germany and Canada.
